12-14 MARCH 2013

Application of Spatial Science in African Research and Development

The Africa Agriculture GIS Week (AAGW) is an annual week-long event that invites spatial scientists in international agricultural research institutes around the world to Africa for showcasing their work and exchanging knowledge and data with Africa-based researchers and developers. The event has a root in the annual meeting of the CGIAR Consortium for Spatial Information (CGIAR-CSI), where spatial researchers across CGIAR centers meet up and update each other with new datasets and research findings. Since 2008, the meeting has been expanded to invite broader audiences and speakers from local academic and research institutions in the region, as well as CGIAR scientists. We expect to have about 100 participants over two days of Science Day programs (12-13 March) featuring about 30 presentations, followed by a Training Day (14 March), where participants can learn the latest spatial data analysis and publishing tools via hands-on exercises and demonstrations.

The main objectives of the event are to:

  • Share experiences in using GIS/RS for agricultural research and development
  • Encourage sharing and learning from each others’ good practices
  • Provide staff from different organizations with the opportunity to create networks for future collaboration
  • Provide an environment to develop ideas on new initiatives

The Addis Ababa campus of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is located on the east side of the city, close the airport and local shops. It is particularly well-located with regard to Addis Ababa’s agricultural community – the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR), and the FAO sub-regional office are all close neighbors. The campus houses offices, laboratories and related buildings of ILRI as well as the offices of eleven partner institutes including CGIAR, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Bioversity International, CIFOR, IFDC, CIMMYT, CIP, IWMI, ICARDA, IFPRI, ICIPE, and IFAD.
